New Ro Fire Department Earns Grant to Fund More Firefighters

The New Rochelle Fire Department has been awarded a $1.67 million grant to fund additional “front line” firefighters as Downtown continues to grow. The funding was announced recently by New York Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand.

The grant was made possible through the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Program, a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) initiative.

City Fire Commissioner and Chief of the Department Andrew Sandor was understandably pleased to hear the news and expressed the Department’s deep gratitude to the Senators for helping NRFD receive this valuable grant.

”The SAFER Grant is a vital tool for delivering emergency services and will strengthen our fire department,” he said.

The SAFER grant program is administered by the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency. Grants are awarded on a competitive basis to applicants that most closely address the program’s priorities and demonstrate financial need.

Congratulations to the NRFD!

Fore!  New Rochelle Public Library Gets Ready for Miniature Golfing

Our New Rochelle Downtown Library Foundation (NRPLF) never fails to come up with a clever way to raise money for our wonderful public library. Take last year’s Scavaganza! Event, which had participants searching through the city for clues as part of the fundraising effort.

The NRPLF has more fun and games on tap next week as they bring a miniature golf course and other family activities right into 1 Library Plaza. Join them on Friday, March 10, and Saturday, March 11, at the New Rochelle Public Library’s Main Branch for mini golf, along with games, food, and drinks.

Friday night will be for the adults. Rounds of mini golf will be paired with rounds of Scrabble, Mahjong, ping pong, music, and whiskey. Join the fun that begins at 7pm.

Saturday will be geared more toward family fun. The event will take place that day from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm.

The miniature golf course is courtesy of the local businesses, organizations, and City agencies that are each creating and designing their own sponsored hole for the event.

Women’s History Month: Downtown Women Entrepreneurs are Making their Mark

New Rochelle Downtown is the perfect location for a wide array of businesses. Just ask any of the countless women business notables who have opened their doors here.

As we celebrate Women’s History Month this March, let us take a moment to celebrate and support the businesswomen who are making their mark throughout our District and helping mentor the next generation of female leaders and pioneers.

A list of New Rochelle Downtown’s businesses that are owned, partnered and managed by women includes:

Celebrating Black History Month

New Rochelle Downtown was home to a broad array of events and activities last month in honor of Black History Month. Our great thanks to all who brought such important and impactful programming to the Community and to the Artists, such as the Bokendye African Dancers and Jazz Artists Wayne Henderson and Friends, who shared their creativity and talent.

FYI:  One of the events – the exhibit at the Lumen Winter Gallery in the New Rochelle Public Library’s Main Branch here in Downtown – will continue through March 4.

It’s a wonderful walk through the long history and many contributions of New Rochelle’s Black residents.

LINC

Community Input Sought for Transformation of Memorial Highway into “The LINC”

The City’s Department of Development is seeking public input on the ongoing work to transform a stretch of Memorial Highway between Lincoln Avenue and Huguenot Street, and from the Memorial Highway Roundabout to Exit 16 off the New England Thruway into a safer, more pedestrian- and traffic-friendly linear park known as the LINC.

What is it you would like to see incorporated in the final design?

Join the City at one of the upcoming public workshops and be heard. They’d love to hear your input and ideas. The dates are:

  • Monday, March 6 from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm

Anderson Plaza Renovation Nears Completion

The incredible work to renovate Anderson Plaza is almost done.

In less than a year, the City Planning Department has completely changed the look and feel of this vital Downtown open space nestled between North Avenue and LeCount Place.

A great deal of work has been done since the groundbreaking last July. Look for the new space to open later this spring.

The new Anderson Plaza park will no doubt be a hub of activity this summer, with expanded seating, areas for dining, a splash pad, and plenty of space flexibility for community events and activities. We can’t wait!

It was a grand day on the roof of Two Clinton Park recently as those involved celebrated its topping out (or topping off). That’s when the last structural beam is put into place, an important milestone in the construction process.

We vote for views and experiences like this.
